What is Amikumu?
Amikumu will be an app that helps you find people nearby to speak any language with. For example, while on holiday, use Amikumu to meet up with Spanish, French or any other language speakers in town.
When will the app be ready?
March 2017. Amikumu will first be launched in the international language, Esperanto in order to build up an initial community, and then it will be opened up to more languages.
How will it work?
There are two ways to find others within Amikumu:
- list: see everyone speaking your target language sorted by distance
- map: see all other target language speakers by their most recent map pin
Both of these features allow you to contact others nearby and arrange an in-person meetup.
Will it be free?
How can I join?
Signing up for Amikumu is quick and easy, or you can just login with Facebook or Google. Once you’re in, just indicate which languages you want to speak and you’re good to go!
Which platforms will Amikumu support?
Amikumu will be available for Android and iOS.
Will others be able to always see exactly where I am?
Your privacy and safety is very important to us, so Amikumu does not show exact locations. The map only shows where users pin themselves. You can set or remove pins at any time as well as decide which language maps you will appear on.
How can I be sure that strange people don’t contact me?
You can’t, but Amikumu has a user blocking feature. When you block a user, they can no longer see nor contact you.
Why will it launch only in Esperanto?
We want to ensure that everything in the app works properly, so we will refine Amikumu with the help of this language community before adding support for more languages.
Will it be open source?
We at Amikumu are friendly to open source. Unfortunately, open source does not currently fit our organization. We are, however, looking into opportunities to open source when we feel that it is the right fit for us.
What does Amikumu mean?
Amikumu means “do the friend thing” in Esperanto.
